✅Action Item Tracking
From Reflection to Action - Drive Real Improvement Across Sprints
Retrospectives are only valuable when they lead to meaningful change. In SprintRetro, action items are built-in to every session - helping your team turn insights into ownership and follow-through.
By default, the Actions column is always visible in your board (unless minimized by the user). It works across templates, sessions, and sprints to keep accountability front and center.
1️⃣ Creating Action Items
You can create actions in two ways:
🔗 Linked Action (from a Retro Item)
Click on any item card in the retrospective board.
Select “Add Action”.
The new action will be linked to that item, making it easy to track what feedback or issue triggered the follow-up.
➕ Direct Action (from Actions Column)
Add a standalone action directly in the Actions column.
These actions are not linked to any specific retro item but are still tracked like normal.
2️⃣ Assigning Actions
Actions can be assigned to any participant in the session.
Assigning actions helps:
Create accountability
Make follow-ups clearer
Ensure ownership for improvements
3️⃣ Carrying Over Actions Between Sessions
Action items persist across retrospectives - but only if:
The current session is closed
The action is still marked as open
Upon starting your next retro session, SprintRetro will prompt:
“Would you like to import action items from your last sprint?”
Importing will add all open action items from your previous sprint to your current sprint backlog.
This lets your team maintain momentum without manual tracking or copying.
4️⃣ Current vs Previous Actions (Column Layout)
The Actions column separates:
Current Actions – created in the current session
Previous Actions – carried over from prior sessions
Each carried-over action is clearly labeled so your team knows what’s still pending.
5️⃣ Completing Actions
Mark an action as complete by checking it off.
Completed actions turn green
They are automatically excluded from future retrospectives
You can view completed items within the current session, but they will not appear in carry-over prompts
🔁 Best Practices for Action Items
✅ Close your retrospective session once done. This enables action carryover.
🧠 Review past actions at the start of each retro to check progress and build continuity.
🧩 Assign owners to drive accountability.
📈 Use actions to track long-term improvements across retrospectives.
