🛠️ Creating a Retrospective
Learn how to start a session, select templates, and invite your team — all in just a few clicks.
SprintRetro makes it easy to spin up a retrospective in seconds, with customization options that suit your team’s needs, session privacy preferences, and format choices.
Step 1: Name Your Session
Give your retrospective a clear, memorable name that reflects the sprint or theme you're reflecting on. This helps keep your session history organized.
Step 2: Choose Session Type – Public or Private
Select whether your session will be Public or Private:
Public: Anyone with access to your Jira instance can join the session.
Private: Only users you add to the session (manually or via search) can access it. You can always add more participants later from within the session.
Step 3: (Optional) Select a Jira Sprint
You can optionally link the session to a specific Jira sprint. This enables Sprint-Powered Metrics to appear in the session, helping your team reflect with context.
These metrics include:
Sprint goal status
Velocity
Burndown
Scope added/spilled
Completion trends
Note:
You don’t need to select a sprint if you prefer a simpler retro.
Metrics can be hidden from participants in session settings after creation.
Step 4: Choose a Template
On the right side of the setup screen, select a template that fits your team’s style.
Templates are grouped into:
Most Popular – curated by the SprintRetro team
Last Used – your most recently run format
Custom – templates you have modified or created
Favourites – templates you’ve “hearted” for quick reuse
You can modify any template:
Add/remove columns
Rename and recolor headers
Reorder sections to match your flow
Once you're happy with the setup, click “Use Template”, then 5) “Create Retro.”
✅ You're Ready to Reflect
Once your retro is created, you’ll land in the live board - ready to start contributing, voting, and reviewing sprint insights with your team.
